Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over the tire.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the side chain on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Tension cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Attach optional tensioners

5. Drive forward and recheck tension. Tighten any loose cams.

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to help give you a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

I know iron. 17 yrs trucking, mostly doubles across Montana into the Dakotas. Chained up a lot.
Pictures show what you get with this set I bought for my 2005 Tahoe. Heavy gauge chains w/triple cam locks w/long wrench for excellent leverage to get cams tight. Tight cams mean links don't "slap" pavement which causes increased wear. They arrived today so not used yet. However, for my application they will last a lot longer than those cheaper; light gauge, "disposable" chains, use once and throw away after you pay a tow bill.

I got these snow chains for my 2022 Ram 1500 4x4 with 275/55-20 tires and they fit perfectly. Hopefully I'll never use them, but they add an additional layer of confidence when traveling in deep snow or needing them to rescue a stuck vehicle in the snow. I like the cam tensioners also keep them tight. These are a lightweight snow chain and not intended for continuous use.

Delivered fast, popped these on to get gamiliare with them and actyally tested them out on a road that was snow packed solid ice, my truck would not spin... i tried to make it, but the chains would not allow it in my situation. Yes chains ride rough.. real rough to be honest, but its better than not making it to your destination. They are heavy ( a big pro) feel like excellent quality and would recommend them to anyone who lives in a state that allows them.

I have only used them twice since i bought these, how ever they have held up great in storage, not a single spot of rust, or anything. They are still in brand new condition

Ford F-250 Super Duty

Not sure these chains would last on a Ford F250 diesel. They are really designed for light weight subcompact passenger car. We shall see ....

I am not planning to carry any significant weight on the snow so they should hold up a few seasons. The price is awesome!

Since the tire chains are made for a 265/75-16 wheel they should hold up on the Ford. Most trucks do have a larger tire on them but since you are not putting any extra weight in the back I do not see you having an issue with the chains.

by:

I got the chains on just before a big snowfall. I put them on my plow truck. (Silverdo with a 8’ meyers) what a difference. Plowed up and down my ice and snow covered 1/4 mike drive with lots of curves and hills. Couldnt be happier with the chains. It took me 2 hours to install them. Never had chains before. There is a learning curve. I expect it will take me 1/2 hour next time. The cam tensioner wrench is made of really soft steel and broke within 15 minutes. I would recommend spending the money for a better one. They about as much as a beer at a ballgame.

2012 Ram 1500

This is the 3rd set of chains I've bought from eTrailer, the first 2 sets were for my work truck and this most recent purchase was for my personal truck.

I work as a delivery driver and bought the first set of chains because i don't have a lot of say which snowy/icy roads i deliver to. Being a work truck the first set of chains got abused a bit so when they finally failed it wasn't unexpected, but up until that point they were nothing short of perfect.

So far the 2nd set for my work truck is going strong (with a bit more effort not to abuse them as much).

This 3rd set is for my personal truck and more for peace-of-mind than anything else, i doubt they will see more than extremely rare use but i have no doubts that they will work as well as i expect them to.

I have not yet taken advantage of the "customer service" from eTrailer since every single thing I've ordered has been received and worked exactly as expected. Communication regarding my order and shipping has always been excellent and even better than i expected. Shipping has been super fast and I've received my products days before i thought i would.

***the picture included isn't exactly the best but you can see the chains and conditions that day (that truck is about the worst vehicle for driving in winter conditions)... also those chains are a different size but they are the same chains.

2015 Dodge Ram Pickup

I had some concerns about the chains fitting my vehicle, 2015 Ram 1500 with P275/60R20. I couldn't find any information from Dodge, nor my dealer, but Etrailer.com just happen to have a video showing 3 options for my exact truck. I tried them on to make sure they fit, and they fit pretty snug and look like they will do just fine. I haven't tested them in the snow, but I will write a follow up review once that happens.

by:

Decent fit on 275/55R20 tires, let’s see how they will work.

by:

Good quality. The Cam style is worth any extra money if so required and is the way to go

etrailer was the best price I could fine, they even beat [online]. Shipping was free, what a bargain for a heavy duty set of Light Truck snow chains !

12/29/2022

Great, they are holding up well, easy to put on and take off, the Cam style tighteners are the only way to go ! The Cams take up any slack and tighten the chains to the point where you almost dont need the bungie style chain tighteners, but I use them anyway because I like them tight with no play on my M&S Tires.

by:

Good chains, but were a bit too long for my 2017 Lexus GX, so a few links of chain had to be cut with a bolt cutter. Even with the chain cut, there is a little extra length that needs to be tied up so that it isn’t clunking as you drive. I’ve had plenty of experience installing chains (both cable and regular) and these were the most difficult ones I’ve ever put on. Hopefully this gets a bit easier with practice!

by:

I've had very positive experience with this company. Last winter I ordered cable-chains from another provider. They weren't up to the task I needed and one set broke pretty quickly. I then ordered a single set (two tires) of chains from etailer to replace the cable-chain that snapped. The purchasing process was seamless, they arrived quickly and they were of very high quality. They took me through the rest of a challenging winter season.

With another winter now approaching, I just ordered a 2nd set so I can install them on all four tires. I won't bother to try to use the cable-chains.

Good company, good product.

Fast, quick delivery. Great customer s ervice.

by:

Went through a couple different sets before biting the bullet on these babies. Easy install after very little adjustment. The cam option is definitely the way to go.

by:

I ordered the chains with tensioners, what I got was chains with the welded cross bars on them.Being that a big storm was coming in two days I installed them and went on with my day.

These chains should definitely have the cam tighteners built into the chains. It sounds like you have received the incorrect set and I will have our customer service team reach out to you.

by:

I have not used these chains yet, however I am sure they will work fine as I have used this type many times in the past. The chains are made very well and are made of a thick gauge steel.

by:

I think this pair will be quite good this winter. They were too long and I had to cut off 6 links on the side chains.

by:

Quality is good, fair value for the price and quick shipping.

by:

A Bag of Chains is better that a Sack of Coal for Christmas.
Seriously, if it's slick outside from snow or ice, one bag of tire chains will get me home safely. With a rear wheel drive pickup, I would need 10 bags of coal to get a grip. I'm glad they came in a heavy duty canvas bag which takes up less room than a plastic box- that might not last a season. Also, etrailer.com had an easy-to-use tire size guide to match to the right products, and a good selection of products to choose from. Mainly, these chains give me the confidence to be the backcountry when the weather report is sketchy.

Funny that you should write, were expecting snow tomorrow, so I put the chains back in the truck. Sorry, nothing else to report.

by:

Shipping was

by:

Excellent project at a great price!

Chains don't fit on 245/75/17 like the part details claims!! I had to cut 1 cross section and 6 links on the longer ends for them to fit!

This product fits tire sizes between 15 to 22 inches. Once you fasten the end of the chains together and use the cams to tighten, you drive forward a little bit then keep tightening the cams as needed. They will still fit a little loose but the good news is that you can get chain adjusters like item # TCMA2 to make it a tighter fit.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for Tire Sizes 245/75/R17 and 235/85R16
There are a few different styles of tire chains which have a different benefits. The V-bar chains are really great for icy conditions as they break up ice well. The square link chains are great for deep snow, and twist links are lower profile and rounder so they provide a smoother ride quality. Diamond pattern is also a bit smoother too since the links are angled across the tops of the tire. They also provide great turning traction too since the chain doesn't go perfectly across the top...

From what I was able to find with my research it looks like Volvo does not recommend chains on wheels larger than 19", so your 20" wheels are going to be slightly too large and using chains on them might potentially damage some of the steering or suspension components. I do recommend checking your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm this. If your manual states that chains can be used, the Titan # TC2228CAM are a confirmed fit for your tires and would be a good choice. You also may want...
